Animal abuse happens everywhere, but one county in Indiana takes animal cruelty to a whole new level with its yearly Snapperfest.
Snapperfest is an annual festival held in Ohio County, Indiana, in which families come to watch competitors abuse snapping turtles. Contestants grab the animals by the tails and slam them to the ground. The turtles are spun around in the air by their heads until the contestant can wrap the neck around his fist. Most of the turtles die from injuries or stress.
Children watching the festivities are consequently witness to extreme animal cruelty on the part of humans at young ages.
The fact is animal abuse often leads to more serious, harmful crimes. To teach these values to children is a grave oversight of logic.
I watched this movie yesterday. Its a documentary about the subculture of keeping exotic animals as pets. And it was the most depressing movie I’ve seen in months. If you already have a pretty good idea that its a bad idea to keep lions and poisonous snakes as pets, don’t watch this movie. You’ll just end up rocking in a corner, crying over how selfish and stupid and horrible humanity is. Never mind that the main guy is out to help these animals…the heartbreaking footage of the film will stick with you more than the promise of hope. Just…fair warning.
R.I.P.: The World’s Ugliest Dog
The 15-year-old current standard bearer for mangy mutts around the globe (and current “World’s Ugliest Dog” Champeen), Yoda the Chinese crested-Chihuahua mix, has passed. The world will miss his twisted gait and the twinkle in his one good eye.

MAKE THE CONNECTION.
"And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence …that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”

Humans kill 100 million sharks a year
…and for what?
- shark finsfor a tasteless bowl of soup
- shark teeth for jewelry
- shark jawsfor tourist souvenirs
- shark skinfor leather wallets/belts
- shark cartilage capsules and powders for phony medicinal cures
- shark liver oilfor cosmetics/skin care products
Sharks are in Danger
100 million sharks are killed each year-by longlines, by “sport” fishermen, or by a barbaric practice known as shark finning. Hooked sharks are hauled onto boats; their fins are sliced off while they are still alive. These helpless animals are then tossed back into the ocean where, unable to swim without their fins, they sink towards the bottom and die an agonizing death.
With 90% of the world’s large shark populations already wiped out, sharks are being depleted faster than they can reproduce. This threatens the stability of marine ecosystems around the world. Sharks are vitally important apex predators. They have shaped marine life in the oceans for over 400 million years and are essential to the health of the planet, and ultimately to the survival of mankind. Sea Shepherd patrols marine protected areas, exposing the corruption that drives this multi-billion dollar industry and directly intervening to stop the brutal slaughter of sharks.
